Matthew 28:18-20 (HCSB)
18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This passage is known as The Great Commission. It was a commandment to all Believers. It was not a suggestion or even a story. It was (and is) a commandment.
Witness. The word challenges us, scares us, and excites us. It is a part of the Christian life on which countless books have been written, sermons preached, seminars attended, resolutions made.
As Believers we are witnesses. Jesus said that we would be His witnesses (Acts). Not that we might be or could be – if we felt like it. He said, “You will be my witnesses.” Once you’ve accepted Jesus as your savior, witnessing is not an option.
But How?
There are more ways taught to witness than to cook biscuits. Some authorities would have us believe that there are a certain set of Scriptures that must be used. Others teach us that certain questions must be asked. I’m not saying that these aren’t good ways, but they aren’t the only way – or even the best way.
Funny, the Disciples didn’t have “The Roman Road” or the “Win One” programs, and they turned their world upside down for Christ.
What did the Disciples do to witness? What did Paul do to witness? What should you and I do to witness?
Tell others what Jesus is doing in our lives.
That’s it? Yep. That’s it.
I have been a Christian for almost 43 years. I have struggled with witnessing. I have attempted to witness. I have been silent when I should have spoken. I have spoken when I should have been silent. I have memorized certain Scriptures – taken many witnessing seminars. It wasn’t until I begged God to give me a passion for witnessing to others that I began to see opportunities and open my mouth.
I was sick of believing that people would know by the way I live my life. That is an important concept, but no one knows that Jesus is my light unless I tell them. There are many “good” people who are headed to Hell unless they accept Christ.
I am losing my fear. It is an irrational fear. I don’t hesitate to tell people about my husband, my children, and my dogs. They love stories about my dogs! But I am scared to say, “Without Jesus, I couldn’t make it through another day.” Why? It isn’t acceptable in my society. But I am finding that people want to hear me say, “Jesus loves you.” They want me to tell them stories of how Jesus has overcome impossible odds in every area of my life: physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, financial, and relational. Why do they want to hear my stories? Because it gives them hope.
You see, I’m not special to anyone but God. I’m ordinary. I am a woman with the same passions and hopes and problems as every other human being on this earth. If God will help me, He might help them too.
If you had a vial of medicine in your pocket and you saw someone dying with the illness that this vial could cure, would you try to decide if you might offend them before you offered them the vial? Of course not! And you’d probably be angry if they refused the vial. Then why can’t we tell others about Jesus?! We have the words of eternal life! There is no other way to get to Heaven than to accept Christ.
Won’t you try? I am finding that it gets easier every time. I had an opportunity last night and it was successful – meaning they were glad I approached them. God only measures our success by our obedience, not the person’s acceptance of the Gospel. Now, I can’t wait for another opportunity! I was disappointed that I didn’t have the same kind of opportunity today.
19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
It’s a command for you and for me. Go! Disciple! Baptize! Teach!
And we aren’t alone! He is with us! What an awesome promise! What power!
*Lord Jesus, what an awesome commission! Why me? I don’t know. I know I have failed You so many times. Forgive me. Please, loosen my tongue. Place a burning desire within me to speak and live the Gospel. Help me to be proud to share what You are doing in my life. Thank You that You are active in my life. Amen.
